Don't forget that you're not simply booking the sailing, but you will likely need to account for flights and potentially a hotel for the night before your cruise. Whether or not you need to account for accommodations on land depends on your flight options and when you arrive at the port of embarkation area in advance of your cruise. If you want to sail to the major cities, a big ship (like Celebrity or Royal Caribbean) will stop at Alaskan cities you regularly hear about.

Alaska Cruise Weather What to Expect

Having the appropriate footwear will not only ensure your comfort but also enhance your safety when navigating different terrains and participating in various activities. Don’t forget to pack a few pairs of comfortable and moisture-wicking socks. Choose synthetic or wool blends to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters during long walks or hikes.

If you plan to be outside near lakes or marshes in the wilderness (fishing, hiking, etc), I’d recommend grabbing a cheap mosquito net as well. A ball cap or sun hat will be your best friend since the sun sits lower in the sky. I also always, always, always pack sunglasses wherever we travel in Alaska. Since the state gets such dramatic swings in sunlight throughout the year, we celebrate both the lightest and darkest days each year. Summer solstice occurs on June 21st and there are many events happening around the state.

Although the rain isn’t convenient, it is the reason for the lush vegetation you enjoy. April marks the beginning of the dry season for Southeast Alaska. However, it’s important to remember that this area is part of the world’s largest temperate rainforest. The benefits of cruising in April include less expensive pricing, fewer tourists, and less crowded ports. Here is a breakdown of other important considerations for an April Alaskan cruise.

Layering your clothing will be key to adapting to the changing weather conditions and staying comfortable throughout your Alaskan cruise in June. June in Alaska marks the transition from spring to summer, offering a mix of weather conditions. While it’s generally considered the start of the summer season, temperatures can still fluctuate, and rain showers are common. It’s important to be prepared for a range of conditions to ensure your comfort throughout your cruise. In most Alaska ports, rainfall occurs about 15 days of the month. You’ve got about a 50/50 chance of getting rained or snowed on during excursions.

Having the proper waterproof gear will ensure that you can fully enjoy your outdoor activities without worrying about getting soaked or uncomfortable. By staying dry, you’ll be able to make the most of your Alaskan cruise and take in the awe-inspiring beauty of the landscape around you. You’re in for a remarkable adventure filled with stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife encounters. As you prepare for your trip, it’s essential to consider what to wear to ensure your comfort and enjoyment throughout the journey.

Flightseeing Wildlife Cruise Arctic Circle

Skagway and Haines get around 2 inches of rainfall, Juneau averages around 3.8 inches of rain, and Ketchikan gets upwards of 7 inches of rain in the month of June. When it rains here, it’s usually in pockets, so if you drive long enough you’re likely to go in and out of the rain. Temperatures in June for all destinations are about the same as September. They are a few degrees cooler than July and August and several degrees warmer than May. Here’s an overview of what you can generally expect weather-wise during your visit in June. We highly recommend travel insurance because any number of things can happen during the cruise, before it, on board, or during a shore excursion.

The Best Time to Cruise Alaska: A Month-by-Month Guide

Ketchikan, a popular stop for cruise ships, is one of the rainiest places in North America. So if you’re cruise includes a visit to Ketchikan, it wouldn’t hurt to pack your rain gear. The exact duration of daylight can vary slightly from year to year and may also be affected by the specific location within Alaska. The farther north you travel towards the Arctic Circle, the more daylight you will experience. Fairbanks is only a few hundred miles south of the Arctic Circle where the sun doesn’t set during the peak summer season. The good news is that June is the month with the longest daylight hours in Alaska.

Peak Season tends to cost more because the weather is better, and that is when more people can travel. You can see whales in Alaska from June to early September, and if you’re lucky, you may see Humpback and Minke Whales, Orcas, Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, and Harbour Porpoises. However, if you just want internet access for fun things like surfing or streaming, we encourage you to take the opportunity and disconnect from high-tech for a while.

Next Norwegian Ship Will Sail with New Restaurants

It can be bright and sunny, but cold winds can fly off the glacier, bringing a brisk chill. Due to the shorter daylight hours, September provides the best opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis from an Alaskan cruise. During May, you’ll find several whale species along Alaska’s inside passage. By this time of the year, most of the whales will have completed their migration from the warm waters of Mexico to Alaska, where they will spend the summer.

Alaska temperatures can be unpredictable, so come prepared with the proper wardrobe. Alternatively, birders might want to time their cruise with the Copper River Shorebird Festival, which takes place early in May in Cordova. Check ahead to make sure your itinerary will stop here, as it's usually only featured on longer 14-day cruises to Alaska.

You can also expect more precipitation, which can result in some snowy weather. If traveling north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska, especially after June 21 (summer solstice), there will be a heavy mosquito presence. The Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise (see above) is amazing for whale watching. However, if you plan to visit Juneau, we highly recommend this Whale Watching Adventure. You will be able to spot humpbacks, killer whales, and other fascinating species in June. Fortunately, even if the ship is at maximum capacity (a rare situation), it shouldn’t affect your experience much.

Choosing to cruise in the early spring of Alaska will impact your experience. Less travelers might sound appealing, but many port towns aren’t fully “tourist operational” until late June when summer workers start to arrive. Many cruise lines also have limited early cruise ships departing for Alaska in April.

Pack your sunglasses, sunscreen, and your bathing suit for a top-deck dip after your shore tour. While June is still a popular time to visit, it tends to be less crowded compared to the peak months of July and August. The vast majority of visitors to Glacier Bay will be aboard one of the many cruise ships that visit throughout the summer.

So, instead of a second pair of standard pants, we pack a pair of these water-resistant ones for cooler days with heavier rain. 💡 Sometimes, we brought a warm winter jacket in June or even later. However, most times, and for most people, our layering methods #1 and #2 keep you warm enough in the summer months. The temperatures in September are slightly cooler, with highs of 55 and lows around 40 degrees fair height. During this month, you can expect the weather begins to cool, higher rainfall, and gorgeous fall landscapes.

For this reason, it can actually feel quite warm once the sun makes an appearance. While Alaska isn’t known for any sort of extreme heat, it can warm up quite a bit, especially when the sun is out. As you can see, the temperature hovers around 50F – 67F, although we have days in the 70’s too (what a treat!).

After robotaxi dragged pedestrian 20 feet, Cruise founder and CEO resigns

Cruise also paused operations of its "supervised" AV fleet thereafter, which seemingly returned to service this month according to the company blog. However, employee morale at Cruise remains low according to TechCrunch, which reports the company has yet to find a replacement CEO and has laid off contracted workers. Vogt sent out an email Saturday saying that certain employees could sell a limited number of shares in a one-time opportunity. Vogt didn’t provide many details but said the company was developing a plan to conduct a new tender offer to provide restricted stock unit liquidity to mitigate potential tax implications. Dan Kan, who co-founded Cruise with Vogt and held a far less public-facing role, has also resigned, TechCrunch has confirmed with sources familiar with the matter. "We continue to believe strongly in Cruise's mission and the potential of its transformative technology as we look to make transportation safer, cleaner and more accessible," she said.

The CEO of General Motors’ self-driving vehicle company Cruise has announced his resignation just weeks after the company shuttered operations of its fleet to review safety procedures. Cruise was founded in 2013 when vehicle automation looked like a surefire near-future technology. While pioneer Tesla pledged to have a driverless vehicle that could cross the country solo by 2017, the closest a publicly sold car has gotten is Mercedes partial eyes-off assist, which only arrived this year. Vehicular autonomy looks further out than ever, and increasingly like a money sink with little potential for payoff—if any at all.

GM announces Cruise CEO Dan Ammann is stepping down

California officials accused Cruise of withholding key information and video after the accident, and the company's self-driving operations are on hold while federal authorities investigate. Barra reportedly told employees that GM general counsel Craig Glidden will serve as Cruise’s co-president alongside Mo Elshenawy, who will also become chief technology officer. Former Tesla president Jon McNeill, who’s been a board member at GM for several years, was named vice chairman of the Cruise board alongside Barra.

According to the Times, the company “put a priority on the speed of the program over safety.” In many ways, it echoes Uber’s infamous approach to self-driving cars, which cut corners on safety in order to get more cars on the road. Eventually, an Uber self-driving car killed a woman crossing the street in Arizona, which resulted in the company shuttering the whole division. Last year, Ford and Volkswagen pulled their funding from Argo AI, forcing the company to cease operations. Toyota’s vision for a futuristic city teeming with self-driving cars has been significantly delayed. In 2022, AV investments went down nearly 60 percent year over year as startups struggled through layoffs or outright closures.

As a result, California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise’s permit to operate driverless cars in the state. A video, which TechCrunch viewed a day after the incident, showed the robotaxi braking aggressively and coming to a stop over the woman. The DMV’s order of suspension stated that Cruise withheld about seven seconds of video footage, which showed the robotaxi then attempting to pull over and subsequently dragging the woman 20 feet. Kyle Vogt, one of Cruise's two founders and later its CEO, declared Sunday on X that he had quit the company a decade after starting it.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik announced that he was stepping down as CEO of Waymo after helping lead the company since 2015. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on October 16 opened an investigation into Cruise vehicles after receiving reports of two pedestrian injuries, including the October 2 incident. The Cruise cars "may not have exercised appropriate caution around pedestrians in the roadway," the agency said.

Vogt's resignation comes roughly two years after he was reappointed as CEO, following an unexpected departure by Dan Ammann, a former GM executive, in December 2021. According to its most recent quarterly update, GM has lost roughly $1.9 billion on Cruise between January and September 2023, including $732 million in the third quarter alone. In October 2021, GM said it expected "new businesses" such as Cruise and its BrightDrop commercial EV business to grow from $2 billion to $80 billion during that timeframe. In orders of suspension the California DMV issued to Cruise, the regulators accused the company of failing to give a transparent account of what happened during the pedestrian collision. GM didn’t provide a reason for Ammann’s departure except to say he was leaving to “pursue other opportunities.” A spokesperson for Cruise declined to provide any additional comment.

"As for what's next for me, I plan to spend time with my family and explore some new ideas. Thanks for the great ride!" Vogt wrote. By Andrew J. Hawkins, transportation editor with 10+ years of experience who covers EVs, public transportation, and aviation. On top of that, Cruise continues to hemorrhage cash, losing $728 million in Q3 and $8 billion since inception according to Reuters. GM CEO Mary Barra has remained supportive of Cruise, but GM's technical partner Honda has reportedly frozen further investment in the firm.

Self-driving car users could watch films on motorway under new DfT proposals

Vogt earlier said most collisions were caused by inattentive or impaired human drivers, not the AVs. In one serious incident in October, the human driver of another vehicle struck a pedestrian in San Francisco at night, tossing her into the path of a Cruise self-driving car, which then drove over and dragged her. Rather than sit back and let driverless cars come to them eventually, Barra insisted on GM staying in the driver’s seat. And now it has to deal with the fallout when that company’s “move fast and break things” culture has resulted in a crisis. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also launched a separate safety probe of the autonomous driving system in Cruise’s vehicles in December following a pair of rear-end crashes.

The agency said the vehicles "may engage in inappropriately hard braking or become immobilized." The accident on 2 October proved that driverless technology still has some way to go before it is rolled out more widely. Another car knocked a pedestrian into the path of a Cruise car, which initially stopped before driving another 6 metres (20ft), dragging the pedestrian along and seriously injuring her. Late last year, U.S. safety regulators said they were investigating reports that autonomous robotaxis run by Cruise can stop too quickly or unexpectedly quit moving, potentially stranding passengers. Former Tesla and Lyft executive Jon McNeill, a member of GM's board of directors since 2022, was appointed vice chairman of the self-driving unit's board after Vogt's resignation.

“We continue to believe strongly in Cruise’s mission and the potential of its transformative technology as we look to make transportation safer, cleaner and more accessible,” Barra stated in an email to employees, according to TechCrunch. And the resignations may not be over; Dan Kan, a co-founder of Cruise and the company’s chief product officer, is also stepping down, according to a source with knowledge of the events. "The most important thing for us right now is to take steps to rebuild public trust," Cruise said in a post on X at the time. "Part of this involves taking a hard look inwards at how we do work at Cruise, even if it means doing things that are uncomfortable or difficult." The announcement comes after Cruise said in late October that it is pausing operations of its driverless fleet throughout the U.S. following a suspension by the state of California.

Mo Elshenawy, who previously served as executive vice president of engineering at Cruise, will now serve as president and chief technology officer for Cruise, the company said. Dan Ammann, the CEO of Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, is stepping down, the automaker announced late Thursday. Kyle Vogt, the co-founder of Cruise and its chief technology officer, will take over as interim CEO. Barra ousted Dan Ammann as Cruise CEO in December 2021, replacing him with Vogt, who at the time was chief technology officer. Ammann, who had once competed with Barra for the top spot at GM, wanted to keep the focus on robotaxis, while Barra and the GM board wanted to go big, including putting Cruise’s technology in luxury Cadillac vehicles.

GM acquired Cruise in 2016 to speed up its self-driving car development program. Ammann, who was then the president of GM, oversaw the acquisition and later assumed the role of CEO of the company. Vogt wanted Cruise to dominate the market much in the same way that Uber dominated Lyft. But in truth, Uber’s failed effort to launch driverless cars turned out to be way more instructive. The initial layoffs included contract workers who had jobs cleaning, charging and maintaining the vehicles as well as answering customer support inquiries.

(Reuters) - - Kyle Vogt, the CEO of General Motors' robot-taxi unit Cruise, has resigned from the company a day after apologizing to staff as the company undergoes a safety review of its U.S. fleet. The company recalled nearly 1,000 vehicles to update their software after the incident. The founder of General Motors-owned Cruise has stepped down less than a month after the driverless car company paused operations after an accident and the loss of permission to operate in California. The Cruise vehicle then moved "rightward before braking aggressively, but still made contact with the pedestrian," the company said. "The AV detected a collision, bringing the vehicle to a stop; then attempted to pull over to avoid causing further road safety issues, pulling the individual forward approximately 20 feet." On Saturday, one day before resigning, Vogt reportedly apologized to staff in an email.

It’s unclear, but GM has already tightened the reins by signaling that layoffs would be coming. Cruise has already laid off many of the contract workers who do maintenance and fleet operations for the company. But now it seems like Cruise employees are at risk of losing their jobs as well. Get a brief on the top business stories of the week, plus CEO interviews, market updates, tech and money news that matters to you. Vogt said in his resignation announcement that "the status quo on our roads sucks, but together we’ve proven there is something far better around the corner" and that he is planning to now spend time with his family and "explore some new ideas." What was one of automated driving’s industry leaders is still losing money, and now, employees are reportedly losing hope too.

In total, WPDE said that nine passengers were not allowed to reenter the ship, including four elderly people and one person who is a paraplegic. The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard even took the passengers to the ship, but they weren't able to get on and had to turn back, WPDE reported. However, an excursion last Wednesday with six other people to São Tomé and Príncipe, an island nation of some 220,000 people off West Africa, took an unfortunate turn.

Uncover the Truth: Can a Dentist Solve Your Bad Breath Woes?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common problem that can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor oral hygiene, certain foods, and medical conditions. Dentists are qualified to diagnose and treat the causes of bad breath. They can examine your mouth to look for signs of gum disease, cavities, or other oral health problems that may be contributing to the problem. They can also recommend lifestyle changes, such as brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, using a mouthwash, and avoiding certain foods, that can help to improve your oral hygiene and reduce bad breath.
